Ministry Rep Caught Taking $40,000 Bribe, Detained

The chief Defense Ministry representative at NPO Lavochkina plant, which is involved with sensitive space programs, has been detained while taking a $40,000 bribe in his office, the Investigative Committee said Wednesday.

Colonel Pavel Smirnov was demanding the money from a private company to approve its work under a state contract related to a space program, the committee said in a statement. The company was not identified. If convicted of taking the bribe, Smirnov faces between seven and 12 years in prison.
