Man Dies in Hospital After 2nd Police Beating

ST. PETERSBURG — A police officer has been detained for beating a man to death in St. Petersburg, a senior official said on Thursday, the second such killing reported this week and the latest in a series of scandals involving the force.

The victim was hospitalized after the Nov. 2 attack but died later of his injuries, including an abdominal trauma that ruptured his bladder, a senior police official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

The accused police officer was taken into custody on Tuesday, said the official. "The policeman wrote out a confession where he explained what happened," he said.

The police force and legal system has come under scrutiny amid growing evidence of malpractice and corruption.

On Tuesday, three Moscow police officers were detained after they allegedly beat an immigrant to death while drunk.

Separately, lawyer Sergei Magnitsky died in jail on Nov. 16. His lawyers say he was denied medical treatment for a health problem that he was diagnosed with while in prison.

President Dmitry Medvedev ordered a probe into the case after it drew widespread condemnation, but the Interior Ministry denied Wednesday that investigators were aware of the 37-year-old's condition.

Earlier this month, a junior policeman from the Black Sea port of Novorossiisk was fired after making an appeal on YouTube to Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, accusing senior officers of corruption. The claim was later dismissed by police authorities as false.
