Litvinenko Inquiry Closed

BERLIN — German prosecutors said Friday that they had dropped an investigation of Russian businessman Dmitry Kovtun, who had been suspected of transporting a radioactive substance used in the fatal poisoning of a former agent, Alexander Litvinenko, in London in 2006.

Litvinenko died of what doctors said was polonium poisoning. Hamburg prosecutors started investigating Kovtun at the end of that year on suspicion that he may have illegally handled radioactive material. They closed their investigation Nov. 6 after concluding that there wasn’t enough evidence to charge Kovtun, prosecutors said.
