KHL Recruits Swedish Hockey Club

STOCKHOLM — Swedish club AIK said Thursday that it would play in Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League next season if its members and the Swedish federation approve the move.

AIK, a Stockholm-based team currently fourth in second-tier league Allsvenskan in Sweden, said it received an invitation from the KHL and has signed a letter of intent to join.

KHL president Alexander Medvedev, a Gazprom deputy chief, said the addition of a Swedish club would boost the league’s ambition of creating a pan-European competition.
