Germany Awards Alexeyeva

Veteran human rights activist Lyudmila Alexeyeva will receive Germany’s highest state award for her work to promote democratic values and her contribution to both the end of the Cold War and the improvement of German-Russian ties, the German Embassy said.

Alexeyeva, head of Moscow Helsinki Group, will be presented with the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany at the German Embassy on Thursday, it said.

The award, established in 1951, is presented to German citizens and foreigners for achievements in the political, economic, social or intellectual realm and for all kinds of outstanding services to the nation in the field of social, charitable or philanthropic work, according to the web site of German President Horst Köhler, who selects award recipients. About 210,000 awards have been handed out since 1951.
