45% of Chemical Weapons Destroyed

Russia has destroyed 45 percent of its chemical weapons, or 18,000 tons of toxic munitions, ahead of the set Dec. 29 deadline, Valery Kapashin, head of the government agency responsible for destruction of chemical weapons, told Itar-Tass on Wednesday.

The country has to eliminate its chemical weapons arsenals by 2012. Kapashin said last year that deadly chemical weapons were being destroyed at seven facilities in six Russian regions.
