Top Provincial Police Official Detained

MOSCOW — Russia's Interior Ministry says the top police official in a Siberian province has been detained as part of a corruption probe.

The detention of Buratiya's Interior Minister Viktor Syusyura comes amid persistent concerns about corruption in Russia's police and security forces. President Dmitry Medvedev is the latest leader to vow a corruption fight, but critics say the results are minimal.

State-run Vesti-24 TV reported Sunday that Syusyura was shipped to Moscow's Lefortovo jail after being detained Saturday in Buryatia, more than 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles) east of the capital.
Vesti-24 reported that he was detained in connection with a smuggling investigation

Interior Ministry spokesman Valery Gribakin said only that his detention was related to corruption investigations.
