Serbs Ratchet Up Security for Medvedev's Visit

BELGRADE — Serbia is raising security measures to the highest level before next week’s visit by President Dmitry Medvedev.

Police said Tuesday that special groups of top intelligence officers were charged with the preparations for the Oct. 20 visit.

Medvedev is expected to take part in anniversary ceremonies marking the liberation of Belgrade from Nazi occupiers in World War II by Soviet troops and local fighters.

Police official Milorad Veljovic said security measures for Medvedev’s visit would be the same as those in place during the May visit of U.S. Vice President Joe Biden.
