Police Break Up Election Protest

MOSCOW — Police say they have detained about 10 protesters who were demanding the cancellation of local election results across Russia.

Independent election observers and opposition parties insist that there were mass violations during voting last Sunday.

The police dragged away the protest organizers and others to prevent them from delivering a petition to the presidential administration.

Friday's protest followed a rare display of discontent in the parliament, when dozens of lawmakers walked out Wednesday to protest the election results.

The Kremlin-favored United Russia party won an overwhelming victory in most of Sunday's 7,000 local elections. The party is a power base for Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who has not ruled out running for president again in 2012.
