More People Face Blame in Dam Case

The list of people responsible for the Sayano-Shushenskaya dam disaster may be expanded as law enforcement agencies continue their inquiry into the August accident, which took the lives of 75 people, the head of the country’s industrial watchdog said Monday.

“The work is far from being done,” said Nikolai Kutin, head of the Federal Service for Environmental, Technological and Atomic Inspection. “And the number of [people] responsible [for the accident] may be expanded.”

Among those who, in his opinion, are legally liable for the disaster, Kutin named “people executing operational control over the work of the power system and equipment usage.”

On Saturday, the watchdog came out with a 141-page report, linking six people to the accident, including former Unified Energy System chief Anatoly Chubais and Deputy Energy Minister Vyacheslav Sinyugin.
