Mobile Phone Users Rise by 24M in 2009

Russian mobile phone subscriptions rose to 203.7 million in September, equivalent to 140.3 percent of the country's population and up from 139.0 percent in August, market research group AC&M said on Wednesday.

The number of mobile phone users rose 1.86 million month on month and by 24.2 million from September 2008.

There were 191 SIM cards in use for every 100 people in Moscow and 185 for every 100 in Russia's second-largest city, St. Petersburg, as of Sept. 30.

In Ukraine, the number of valid SIM cards stood at 55.5 million and penetration increased to 120.5 percent from 120.4 percent as of Aug. 31.
