France's EDF Seeks South Stream Stake

PARIS — Electricite de France SA said Friday that talks with Russian natural gas giant Gazprom should soon lead to EDF taking a minority stake in the planned South Stream pipeline.

The pipeline, which aims to avoid Ukraine, goes from Russia across the Black Sea to the Balkans and from there to other parts of Europe.

EDF Chief Executive Pierre Gadonneix and Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller met in Paris to discuss the plan. EDF called the pipeline "a major step forward in its gas strategy" and in helping to secure natural gas for France.

A deal is expected to be signed in the near future, EDF said in a statement.
