Court Ignores Defamation Suit Against Nemtsov

The Moscow Arbitration Court ignored a defamation lawsuit filed by Mayor Yury Luzhkov's wife against an opposition figure, Boris Nemtsov, because it was filed improperly, Interfax reported Tuesday.

Yelena Baturina filed the suit on Friday over Nemtsov's report on Luzhkov's terms in office, which claimed Baturina's company, Inteko, owed the success of its real estate business to her marriage with Luzhkov.

Interfax did not say exactly how the filing of the lawsuit, which seeks 200,000 rubles ($6,700) in damages, was inconsistent with the court rules. Luzhkov also sued Nemtsov for defamation.

Nemtsov's report criticized Luzhkov for failing to fight crime, corruption and improve traffic, but mostly focused on the relationship between the Moscow city government and Baturina, whom Forbes magazine ranked as the country's richest woman. Both Luzhkov and Baturina have called the report as untrue.

Nemtsov has said he would be glad to face off with the couple in court.
