Party Backs Chichvarkin With a Web Site

Right Cause has launched a web site in support of former Yevroset chairman Yevgeny Chichvarkin, who faces arrest on kidnapping and extortion charges.

A court this week sanctioned the arrest of Chichvarkin, who was nominated to head the party's Moscow branch before he left Russia last year.

Right Cause launched the web site late Wednesday to provide information about the businessman's legal troubles, a party spokeswoman said. The web site features a picture of Chichvarkin's face photoshopped onto the iconic photograph of the late Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara. Next to the picture is the phrase, "Our Comrade Chi."

Chichvarkin has denied wrongdoing, and Right Cause has portrayed the probe as an example of authorities unjustly targeting business.

First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov said at the World Economic Forum on Wednesday that Chichvarkin's arrest warrant was not aimed at intimidating Russian businessmen.

Investigative Committee head Alexander Bastrykin, whose investigators are handling the case against Chichvarkin, said Thursday that the committee would likely contribute to the web site to "publicize the course of the investigation," Interfax reported.
