Finland Sending Observers

HELSINKI -- The Finnish government said Saturday that it would send at least 10 observers to Georgia as part of a European Union monitoring mission.

Italy decided Friday to send 40 observers to the mission and the netherlands agreed to send three military police observers and nine civilian observers.

The European Union is sending 230 civilian monitors to Georgia to verify whether Russian forces are complying with a cease-fire agreement after last month's war with Georgia. (AP)

EU Praises Turkish Efforts

HELSINKI -- The Georgian crisis has strengthened the strategic importance of Turkey both in the Caucasus and for the European Union, the bloc's enlargement chief said Friday.

EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn said Turkey was "engaged in very active and evidently successful diplomacy" in its neighboring regions.

Turkey has met separately with Georgian and Russian officials in an effort to promote peace between the two countries. (AP)
