Onishchenko Vs. Tobacco

Chief epidemiologist Gennady Onishchenko on Tuesday accused tobacco companies of carrying out a "nicotine genocide" in Russia, Interfax reported.

Tobacco companies "are trying to establish in Russia 'medievally' high levels of nicotine and tar in cigarettes" and sell "the lowest quality of tobacco," Onishchenko told Interfax.

Onishchenko described tobacco companies as "serving foreign, and primarily American capital." (MT)

Kiev Bill Sees Fleet Leaving

KIEV -- Ukraine's foreign minister said Tuesday he has prepared a bill stipulating that the Russian Black Sea Fleet must leave Sevastopol when a lease agreement expires in 2017.

Ukraine wants the ships out, while Russia is eager to continue renting the naval base and is offering to pay more.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Volodymyr Ohryzko said the bill will soon be submitted to parliament.

The Russian Foreign Ministry called the move unconstructive and premature. (AP)
