Bomb Kills 5 Policemen In Grozny

A roadside bomb killed five police officers in Grozny, and another officer was shot dead near the city, officials said Monday.

The blast, set off by remote control, occurred late Sunday, the Emergency Situations Ministry's regional branch said. Two other police officers were seriously wounded.

The officers were part of a 10-man unit working to tighten security in the city before Wednesday's inauguration of President-elect Dmitry Medvedev and the celebration of Victory Day on Friday.

Investigators found bolts and nails scattered at the scene that had apparently been used by the bomb-makers to increase damage from the explosion, RIA-Novosti reported.

In 2004, Chechen President Akhmad Kadyrov was killed in a bomb blast at a Grozny stadium, where he was attending Victory Day ceremonies. Three of the fatalities in Sunday's bombing belonged to a special police division named after Kadyrov, RIA-Novosti said.

The republic's Interior Ministry said a traffic policeman was shot dead overnight while traveling with another officer on a road near Grozny. (AP, MT)
