News in Brief

Students Allowed to Stay

The director of the Gnesin Academy of Music told students they could stay in their dormitory Tuesday, the day they had been threatened with eviction.

Mikhail Sayamov told students they could stay in the building despite a notice they received last week ordering them to leave by Tuesday or face forcible eviction by court marshals, RIA-Novosti reported.

"All the rumors that the dormitory would be sold or that students would end up on the street are lies," Sayamov was quoted as saying.

The notice said students needed to leave the dormitory for 30 days while fire-safety violations were fixed. Sayamov said the repairs would take place with students still inside the building. On Monday, students held a noisy protest against the threatened eviction at the Atrium shopping mall. (MT)

Italian Tourist Attacked

An Italian tourist was robbed and beaten by unidentified assailants in northwest Moscow, Itar-Tass reported Tuesday.

Three armed men accosted the tourist Friday as he was entering an apartment building on Leningradsky Prospekt and bundled him into their car, a law enforcement source told Itar-Tass.

"They began to threaten the foreigner and then put him in their Jeep, where the man was beaten and his money and valuables were stolen," the source said.

The attackers dropped off the victim, 32, at Rizhskoye Shosse, also in north Moscow, the source told Itar-Tass.

The tourist is being treated for minor injuries, and police are looking for the attackers, Itar-Tass said. (MT)
