The blast occurred at around 9 a.m. in a service room in a 10-story building on Ulitsa Korneyeva in southwest St. Petersburg, Gennady Yashin, head of the Kirov District branch of the Investigative committee, said by telephone.
Investigators believe a grenade -- fragments of which were found at the scene -- may have been detonated, Yashin said.
It was unclear, however, why the grenade might have been kept in the storage room, Yashin said. A criminal case has been opened in connection with the possession and trafficking of illegal weapons, he said.
Killed in the blast was a 40-year-old man who died of his injuries in the hospital, Yashin said. Peter Guk, a 27-year-old plumber, and Viktor Petrov, 37, were hospitalized with serious injuries, he said.
