Ex-Transportation Minister Arrested

KIEV -- Ukrainian authorities have arrested a former transportation minister on suspicion of embezzling government money on a weekend trip to Paris, officials said Monday.

Mykola Rudkovsky is accused of spending some 400,000 hryvna ($80,000) of state funds while on a four-day trip to Paris last summer, the Kiev Prosecutor's Office said in a statement.

His opponents said Rudkovsky used state money to pay for a romantic getaway.

Rudkovsky, 40, who has been under investigation since December, was detained Saturday. Kiev's Pechersk District Court on Monday ordered Rudkovsky to remain in custody while the investigation is ongoing on the grounds that he has refused to cooperate with prosecutors while at large.

Rudkovsky dismissed the accusations as politically motivated, saying he was in Paris on a work trip and that he did not misuse any funds. "I am not afraid of an objective investigation; I have all the documents," Rudkovsky said in a statement.
