Politkovskaya Evidence Questioned

A lawyer for a suspect in the killing of reporter Anna Politkovskaya questioned the soundness of the prosecution's case Tuesday, saying evidence introduced by prosecutors suggested that the murder had taken place at the same time that the body was discovered.

Politkovskaya was shot dead in her apartment building on Oct. 7, 2006. At the request of Murad Musayev, lawyer for Dzhabrail Makhmudov, one of three suspects on trial in a Moscow court, the jury was shown footage from cameras above the entrance of Politkovskaya's building indicating that the killer entered at 3:56 p.m., Politkovskaya entered at 4:06 p.m., and the killer left 30 seconds later. Musayev wanted to read a police report about where and when the body was found, but prosecutors insisted that jurors leave the courtroom. After they left, Musayev said the police report said the body had been found at 4:06 p.m. "We have a lot of questions on this matter," he later told reporters.

The trial will resume Thursday.
