Russia agreed to supply Lebanon with 10 Mig-29 fighter jets, RIA-Novosti reported, citing a joint press statement with Lebanese Defense Minister Elias Murr.

Anatoly Serdyukov, Russian's defense minister, said the Defense Ministry received a detailed list of what the Lebanese armed forces need and will look into it during talks with the Lebanese delegation.

The shipment of 10 MiG-29s, a Soviet-designed fighter jet still considered one of Russia's best warplanes, will boost Lebanon's small air force of five Hawker Hunter jets, which date from the 1950s and 1960s, and 16 helicopters.

Russia has sought to expand its clout in the Middle East and hopes to host a Mideast peace conference next year. The country is a member of the so-called Quartet of Mideast peacemakers, which also includes the United States, the European Union and the United Nations.
