Uzbek Held In Death of Teen Girl

An Uzbek man has admitted to raping and murdering a 15-year-old girl in western Moscow in a case that has prompted angry demonstrations by nationalists in recent weeks, city police said Thursday.

The suspect, 31, was arrested in an apartment in southeast Moscow and confessed to raping and murdering Anna Beshnova on Oct. 1, city police spokesman Viktor Biryukov said.

The case has been handed over to the Moscow branch of the Investigative Committee, said Biryukov, who did not release the suspect's name.

Beshnova was returning home from her boyfriend's apartment at around midnight on Ulitsa Kubinka, near the Kuntsevskaya metro station, when she was attacked by a man described by witnesses as "non-Slavic" and wearing a jacket commonly worn by migrants working menial jobs for the city.

Media reports said the assailant raped the girl in the bushes next to an apartment building and strangled her. He then slept next to the body for several hours before fleeing, the reports said.

Several local residents have told the media that they watched the rape and did nothing because they believed that it was consensual sex.

Activists from the ultranationalist Movement Against Illegal Immigration and several other national groups staged a rally near the crime scene on Oct. 12, demanding that police apprehend the perpetrator.
