Prison Search Plans Attacked

Lawyers for former Yukos CEO Mikhail Khodorkovsky on Friday attacked plans by the Federal Prison Service to impose stricter searches before visits with their clients, Interfax reported.

"We will not let anyone violate the law and the rights of our client or ourselves," Yury Schmidt, one of Khodorkovsky's lawyers, said in a statement posted on the defense team's web site.

The statement came in reaction to comments by the top Federal Prison Service official in the Chita region, Yunus Amayev, made after an interview with Khodorkovsky was published in Esquire magazine. "We will toughen search procedures for lawyers," Amayev said.

Khodorkovsky was placed in an isolation cell last week for the publication by Esquire of letters exchanged with author Boris Akunin, his defense team said.
