Gradus Bar
Nedalny Vostok is celebrating its first birthday, and this Wednesday the pan-Asian restaurant is pulling out all the stops to ensure that the anniversary is a success. After passing under the facade, guests will be greeted inside by wait staff dressed in Asian national costumes. Opposite the bar will be a row of plasma screens showing various market scenes and cityscapes from around Asia. Guests will receive a fortune cookie with a lottery number, and among the prizes up for grabs are Novikov discount cards and a trip for two to the Sukhothai Hotel Bangkok. The special menu continues through Feb. 6.

Holding its official opening Jan. 30 is a new downtown drinking establishment -- Gradus Bar (pictured). The 940-square-meter bar, which features five separate rooms and seating for 200, is located on Ulitsa Sretenka. Particularly high ceilings are a function of its basement location. The interior features plenty of exposed brick, massive mirrors, dark-stained floorboards and large leather sofas. Sports are to be shown on a huge screen, and the menu offers 18 varieties of imported beer as well as three house beers from a brewery near Penza.

Upmarket restaurant Politica, located in the posh Rublyovka region, has given its menu a winter makeover. New are such dishes as Florentine steak with sun-dried tomatoes and basil (600 rubles), sea scallops under carrot juice with white port, poached egg, truffle flavor and asparagus salad (950 rubles) and eggplant lasagna with lavender-fried duck breast, Asiago cheese and pesto (410 rubles). The dessert menu has been updated with such dishes as chestnut nougat with pear and sesame (250 rubles) and mango flambe with passion fruit sauce and ginger sherbet (300 rubles).

China Club has launched a new menu celebrating Peking duck. Besides the classic itself (Peking duck with steamed pancakes -- 1,460 rubles), there are also other thematic dishes such as Peking duck salad (1,100 rubles), Chinese duck soup (550 rubles), duck breast smothered in prawn sauce (920 rubles) and duck leg in a Chinese spice sauce (810 rubles).
