Support Rising for Communists

Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov has registered his highest level of support this year as a presidential candidate, a poll by the Levada Center said Wednesday.

The poll said 15 percent of voters would support Zyuganov in March's presidential vote, up from 12 percent in August and 14 percent in June and July.

Acting First Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov remains in the lead with 34 percent, down two points from August. Acting First Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev fell four points to 30 percent.

The poll was conducted Sept. 14 to 17 in a nationwide sample of 1,600 adults in 46 regions. New Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov, who has said he may run if he is successful in his new job, was not included in the poll.

The poll confirms a Public Opinion Fund survey showing that, with just 7 percent of public support, A Just Russia was in danger of not qualifying for the State Duma in the Dec. 2 elections.
