Poll Casts Doubt on a Just Russia's Duma Bid

A Just Russia would not garner enough support to win seats in the State Duma if elections were held this weekend, according to the results of a Public Opinion Fund poll released Tuesday.

Figures from the poll show that United Russia is set to dominate in the Dec. 2 vote, with 48 percent of respondents who plan to vote saying they would back the pro-Kremlin party.

But A Just Russia, also a pro-Kremlin party, got support from only 6 percent of respondents, less than the 7 percent needed to clear the threshold to win seats.

The poll indicated that 9 percent were ready to vote for the Communists, and 7 percent for the Liberal Democratic Party.

"These figures cannot be considered a forecast of the election results," Lyudmila Presnyakova, a senior researcher with the Public Opinion Fund, said at a news conference.

"But if the vote took place next weekend and I had to make a forecast, I would seriously doubt A Just Russia's chances and be more or less certain that the Communists and the Liberal Democrats would make it into the Duma," she said.

Presnyakova said liberal opposition parties -- Yabloko and the Union of the Right Forces -- would probably get just 1 percent support each.

The poll was conducted over the weekend among 3,000 respondents in 63 regions.
