One Dead in Ingush Gunbattle

NAZRAN, Ingushetia -- A gunbattle broke out in Ingushetia on Sunday, and at least one person was killed.

The fighting occurred in the town of Karabulak, 35 kilometers east of the region's main city, Nalchik, at about 5:45 p.m., police said. The circumstances of the shooting were unclear, but police said at least one person, believed to be an armed militant, was killed.

Local news web site said a group of fighters attacked the town's police headquarters using small arms and grenade launchers.

On Friday, a car bomb exploded near a police vehicle in the center of Nazran, killing four police officers, officials said.

The blast occurred after police responded to a call about a suspicious car.

Witnesses said a police vehicle stopped near a parked car, and officers emerged and apparently asked a group of men playing cards nearby about the car. It exploded as the police were getting back into their vehicle, the witnesses said -- accounts that suggested the call could have been a trap to lure police to the car.

In an attack targeting civilians, gunmen burst into a home in Ingushetia early Friday and killed three members of a Russian-speaking schoolteacher's family, the teacher and officials said.

The assailants, possibly numbering three, entered Vera Draganchuk's home in the town of Karabulak shortly after midnight Thursday and fatally shot her husband and two sons, 24 and 20, Draganchuk and police said.
