BUELACH, Switzerland -- A Swiss court Tuesday convicted four employees of Swiss air traffic control company Skyguide of negligent homicide in the deaths of 71 people in a midair plane collision five years ago.

Three people were given one-year suspended prison sentences, while the other was ordered to pay a 13,500 Swiss franc ($11,200) fine for his role in the July 1, 2002 collision of a Bashkirian Airlines plane and a DHL cargo jet over Germany, killing the two cargo pilots and all on the passenger plane.

Four other officials of Skyguide were acquitted. (AP)

ROSTOV-ON-DON -- A clash between security forces and gunmen who attacked a school and a house in Chechnya killed one policeman and wounded four other officers, the regional Interior Ministry said Tuesday.

Belarus Spy Trial Opens

MINSK -- Four Belarussian army officers went on trial behind closed doors Tuesday on charges of spying for Poland.

The accused could, in theory, face the death penalty if convicted of espionage and treason, though there are no known instances of the penalty having been applied. A fifth officer, a Russian, is to face charges in his home country.

Security officials say the accused were told by the Polish intelligence service to provide secret information on the operations of the Belarussian armed forces and the country's joint air defense system with Russia. (Reuters)
