News in Brief

Tourists' Canoes Found

BEIJING -- Chinese rescuers have found clothes and canoes left by six missing Russian tourists but have yet to locate the group of outdoor adventurers missing in China's vast far west, Chinese state media reported Thursday.

Searchers found the items on the Yurungkax River, which flows through the city of Hotan in the western region of Xinjiang, the Xinhua news agency said.

The group had been exploring the wild river since mid-August and failed to turn up at Hotan early this month as planned, prompting the search.

Hundreds of local police and residents, as well as 40 Russian searchers, are continuing the hunt, the report said. (Reuters)

Germany Tries CFE Rescue

BERLIN -- Germany is launching an initiative to rescue the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe, which Russia turned its back on earlier this year, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said.

"I will be just as annoyed as you if this treaty is suspended," Steinmeier told the Bundestag on Wednesday.

Steinmeier said Germany would host a conference in October to discuss the pact limiting conventional strengths on both sides of the old Iron Curtain.

German Foreign Ministry officials said high-ranking officials from treaty member states would use the meeting to discuss the future of the pact after Russia suspended its participation earlier this year. (Reuters)
