Maskayev Pulls Out of Title Defense

NEW YORK -- WBC heavyweight champion Oleg Maskayev has pulled out of next month's title defense to Samuel Peter of Nigeria with a back injury.

Peter's promoter Dino Duva said Friday that he had been informed by Maskayev's camp that the Russian had a herniated disc and was ruled out of the Oct. 6 fight by doctors.

"We are shocked and disappointed that Maskayev is pulling out of the fight," Duva said. "We intend to verify this injury and the extent of it."

Duva called on the World Boxing Council to allow Samuel to fight for the WBC interim heavyweight title on the same Oct. 6 date, with Maskayev getting a shot at the crown once he is healthy.

Maskayev, who has a record of 34-5, won the title by stopping Hasim Rahman in the 12th round last August.

Peter is 28-1 with his only defeat coming in September 2005, when he lost to Ukrainian Vladimir Klitschko on points, despite knocking his opponent down three times.
