Carlsberg Eyes Rest of Baltic Breweries

Carlsberg is financially prepared to make acquisitions including the 50 percent stake it does not control in Baltic Beverages Holding, the owner of Russia's biggest beer maker, chairman Povl Krogsgaard-Larsen said Friday.

"We have capital at our disposal, and we are prepared to act on whatever might emerge," he said.

Krogsgaard-Larsen spoke after the Berlingske Tidende newspaper reported that he said Carlsberg could pay as much as 40 billion kroner ($7.4 billion) for the Baltic holding.

Acquiring the rest of Baltic from Scottish & Newcastle may cost as much as ?5 billion ($10.1 billion), analysts said. Baltic controls Baltika Breweries, whose sales and profit are surging.

The chairman's comments "again highlighted the probable importance of BBH, and hence Scottish & Newcastle, in the next phase of consolidation in the global brewing industry," Matthew Webb, an analyst at JPMorgan Cazenove in London, said in a research note.
