The Russians set out with eight rented donkeys carrying 400 kilograms of gear, including food, medicine, a global positioning system and tents, Xinhua said. The group had planned to travel 6,000 meters up the Kunlun mountain range and paddle down the Yurungkax River in three canoes for 12 days. But they failed to meet up with their local interpreter, Zhang Hong, as scheduled Sept. 2.
The report identified the six Russians as Vladimir Smetannikov, Sergei Chernik, Andrei Pautov, Dmitry Tishchenko, Ivan Chernik and Alexander Zverev. The report did not give their hometowns but said they were 25 to 47 years old.
