Spain Handing Over Murder Suspect

Spain on Friday will hand over to Russia a key suspect in the 2002 slaying of Magadan Governor Valentin Tsvetkov in central Moscow, the Prosecutor General's Office said in a statement on its web site Thursday.

Spanish authorities will turn over Alexander Zakharov, who was arrested in the seaside resort of Marbella last year and has been charged with organizing the murder of Tsvetkov, who was gunned down in broad daylight in a contract-style killing on Ulitsa Novy Arbat in October 2002. They were placed on Interpol's wanted list in 2003 at the request of city police.

There was no mention in the statement of whether Spain would extradite Martin Babakehyan, who was arrested along with Zakharov and has also been charged with organizing Tsvetkov's slaying. Prosecutors say they organized the brazen attack at the behest of "an unidentified individual."
