Shootout Kills 3 In Grozny

A shootout in Grozny left two policemen and a senior rebel dead, the Chechen Interior Ministry said Friday.

The ministry said officers had stopped a suspicious man on a street in Grozny on Thursday night to check his documents when the man opened fire on them with a pistol. The man then fled to a nearby apartment, the ministry said.

Police surrounded the apartment building and, in the subsequent shooting, two officers and the suspect were killed, the ministry said.

It later identified the man as Rustam Basayev, a high-placed comrade of Doku Umarov, the leader of Chechnya's separatist rebels.

A Chechen rebel web site,, also reported that Basayev had been killed.

Also Thursday, a group of about 30 camouflage-clad gunmen set fire to the houses of two police officers and the local administration building in the Chechen village of Yandi, the ministry said.

In neighboring Ingushetia, meanwhile, gunmen opened fire on Interior Ministry troops Friday near the republic's main city, Nazran. The ministry said one servicemen was killed in the attack.
