Kadyrov Makes Mecca Pilgrimage

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia -- Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov visited the holy city of Mecca for a pilgrimage Monday and was to meet with Saudi King Abdullah. Kadyrov, who visited Mecca in March, performed the Umrah -- among devout Muslims a recommended but lesser pilgrimage than the Hajj -- after arrival Sunday in Saudi Arabia, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

He was to meet Abdullah on Tuesday, the agency said.

Kadyrov, who was met by Saudi officials at the Kaaba, the cube-like shrine which millions of Muslims face in daily prayers, told Interfax that he had brought a personal message from President Vladimir Putin to the Saudi king. He did not elaborate.

Abdullah regularly meets with foreign Muslim leaders who make pilgrimages and other visits to Mecca.
