Boy Fleeing from Police Falls 6 Stories

PARIS -- A 12-year-old Russian boy from an illegal immigrant family was in a coma after falling from a sixth-story window while trying to flee French police officers conducting an immigration check, officials said.

French Prime Minister Francois Fillon ordered an internal police inquiry, and prosecutors in the northern city of Amiens also opened an investigation into the incident.

Russian nationals Ivan Dembsky and his father tried to flee police who showed up at their apartment building in Amiens. Neighbor Josue Mayuemba said a locksmith had attempted to break down the door.

Dembsky had serious brain injuries and was transported to the neurosurgery department of Amiens' hospital, the prosecutor's office said late last week.

Police carried out the immigration check "in controlled conditions, without any particular violence, at a normal hour of the day," Amiens prosecutor Patrick Beau said.

French immigration officials announced Sunday that Dembsky's family was being granted temporary legal status in France so that his parents could stay by him while he remained in hospital, Interfax reported. (AP, MT)
