At Least 5 Dead in Building Collapse

BAKU, Azerbaijan -- The bodies of at least five construction workers have been pulled from a collapsed 16-story building in Azerbaijan's capital, and three others have been found alive, officials said Wednesday evening.

Officials had earlier put the death toll at seven, but two of the workers found overnight, who were initially believed to be dead, were determined to be alive when they arrived at the hospital, an Azeri Health Ministry spokeswoman said.

The Azeri Emergency Situations Ministry said five people were confirmed dead. Baku's chief prosecutor, Aziz Seidov, put the death toll at six.

Seidov said rescuers were searching for three or four workers believed trapped alive beneath the rubble, while local television reported that at least five were still trapped. It said their location became known after one made a call from his mobile phone.

The building was under construction when it collapsed. Prosecutors blamed violations of safety regulations.

The head of the construction company and another company executive were arrested, Azeri Prosecutor General Zakir Qaralov said Wednesday.
