Teen Arrested in Attack on Own Mother's Camp

A teen has been arrested on suspicion of participating in a deadly attack on a gathering of anti-nuclear protesters arranged by his mother's organization, regional prosecutors said Monday.

Pavel Rikhvanov, the 19-year-old son of environmentalist Marina Rikhvanova, has been arrested and will be charged with hooliganism in connection with the attack, Irkutsk Regional Prosecutor's Office spokesman Alexander Semyonov said Monday, RIA-Novosti reported.

Masked assailants armed with metal rods and baseball bats rampaged through the forest camp near the city of Angarsk on July 21. One activist, Ilya Borodayenko, 26, died of severe head injuries in a hospital a few hours later.

Rikhvanova is a leader of the environmentalist group Baikal Ecological Wave, one of the camp's organizers, RIA-Novosti said.

The camp was organized by a number of environmental activist groups to protest against the Angarsk Electrolysis Chemical Plant. Russia is planning a uranium enrichment center at the plant, which had previously been producing uranium fuel for nuclear power plants.

In total, 16 suspects have been detained. Thirteen of those detained have been charged with hooliganism, and one has been charged with manslaughter.

Semyonov said activists in the anti-fascist movement Antifa had beaten up a skinhead two weeks ago and that the rampage was a revenge attack.
