Strip Club Charged with Operating a Brothel

Police have detained a Turkish businessman on suspicion of running a brothel at the popular strip club Safari Lodge, city police said Monday.

Officers from the city police organized crime department raided the club, on Ulitsa Pokrovka in central Moscow, shortly after 6 a.m. Friday and detained the businessman who is the club's deputy director, police spokeswoman Yelena Perfilova said.

"Using his position, the Turkish man organized the maintenance of a prostitution den and systematically offered the night club's premises for providing paid services of a sexual nature to clients of the venue," Perfilova said.

The suspect, whose name was witheld because of the ongoing investigation, had not been charged as of Monday afternoon, though he would likely be charged sometime this week, Perfilova said. If charged and convicted with running a brothel, he could face up to five years in prison.

Eight women, aged 21 to 38, were also detained in the raid on suspicion of prostitution, a police source told RIA-Novosti.

A woman who answered the telephone at Safari Lodge on Monday said no one was available to comment on the incident.

Signs on the club's front doors Monday said it was closed for reconstruction. Seals bearing police markings had also been placed on the doors.
