Sailor Found Dead in Attic

A senior Navy official was discovered dead in the attic of his Moscow region home, apparently having been tied up, tortured and beaten to death by unidentified assailants, prosecutors said Thursday.

The body of Captain Vasily Shcherbakov, head of food supply service in the Navy's logistics division, was discovered Wednesday evening in the attic of his home in the village of Kupavna, 20 kilometers northeast of Moscow, the Moscow region Prosecutor's Office said in a statement.

Shcherbakov, 47, had his hands and feet bound with tape, and his body showed signs of having been tortured, prosecutors said in the statement.

The assailants stole cash and valuables from the home and fled in Shcherbakov's Mitsubishi, which was parked outside his home, prosecutors said.

Navy spokesman Igor Dygalo confirmed Shcherbakov's death and said his body was discovered by a local police officer, Interfax reported.
