Guards Kill Passer-By 'For Fun'

Two security guards have been arrested for beating and stabbing a 58-year-old man to death "for fun" at Belorussky Station, police said Tuesday.

Vladislav Zotkin and Vitaly Ignatov were on their way to the private security company where they work early Thursday when they stopped for a smoke near an underpass at the train station, said Vitaly Bely, chief of the station's police precinct. The two men, both 23, were very drunk, and they attacked Vitaly Mazin when they saw him walking with his bicycle in the underpass, Bely said.

The attack was captured on video by surveillance cameras, and footage of the attack was shown on Rossia television Thursday evening. Passers-by were shown scurrying up the stairs, away from the beating. One man who attempted to intervene was stopped by the woman with whom he was walking.

After beating Mazin for several minutes, Zotkin pushed him up against the wall and stabbed him in the chest five times, Bely said. Mazin died at the scene before help could arrive.

Mazin had arrived that evening from his dacha on a commuter train and was walking to his home on Lesnaya Ulitsa, near the train station, Bely said. While nobody intervened on Mazin's behalf, several witnesses notified police immediately, which allowed them to detain the suspects minutes after the attack.

There was no clear motive, Bely said. "They just said they decided to have some fun," he said.

Both men have been charged with murder and face life in prison.

Bely said neither had expressed remorse when taken by police to the crime scene Friday. "It was as if nothing serious had happened," Bely said. "They had big smiles across their faces."
