Grain Harvesting Rises From 2006

The country's large and medium-sized farms harvested 8.47 million tons of grain by bunker weight by July 10, 20 percent more than the 7.04 million brought in a year ago, the Agriculture Ministry said Friday.

A ministry statement said this figure included 5.93 million tons of wheat, up from 4.65 million at the same date last year and 1.52 tons of barley.

The ministry published the barley harvesting progress figures for the first time and therefore did not supply comparative figures.

The ministry said grains were harvested from 2.65 million hectares, up from 2.10 million last year, wheat from 1.94 million hectares, up from 1.40 million hectares and barley from 367,400 hectares.

Russia expects to harvest 76 million tons of grain this year by clean weight, down from 78.6 million in 2006 due to a drought in some grain growing regions in the end of May and in June.
