Ex-Anglo Exec to Sit on RusAl Board

United Company RusAl plans to offer a seat on its board of directors to Simon Thompson, former managing director of mining group Anglo American, Vedomosti reported Monday.

Vedomosti, quoting sources close to RusAl, said Thompson could also become chairman of the firm's 12-member board replacing oil-to-metals tycoon Viktor Vekselberg.

Vekselberg became RusAl's chairman after the company failed to appoint Brian Gilbertson, former CEO of BHP Billiton and president of SUAL, to RusAl's board because of a pay dispute, Vedomosti said. The board also includes RusAl co-owners Oleg Deripaska and Len Blavatnik, as well as Glencore International CEO Ivan Glasenberg.

RusAl, the world's top aluminum producer, is sounding out banks about a possible flotation that could raise as much as $9 billion.

RusAl can't comment on the possibility of Thompson's nomination until after a board meeting in late July, said a RusAl spokeswoman, who declined to be identified.
