Bukovsky Seeks Passport to Run

Soviet-era dissident Vladimir Bukovsky submitted his passport application to the Russian Embassy in London on Thursday ahead of his bid to run for president next year, Ekho Moskvy radio reported.

Bukovsky, who was deported from the Soviet Union in 1976 and now lives in Britain, has dual citizenship, but his last Russian passport, given to him in 1992 by then-President Boris Yeltsin, expired in 1997, Ekho Moskvy reported.

Bukovsky is required by law to have a Russian passport in order to participate in the March presidential election. He announced his intention to run as an opposition candidate earlier in May.

A presidential candidate must also have lived in Russia for at least 10 years. Bukovsky has expressed doubt that he will be registered as a candidate.
