'Bittsevsky Maniac' Case Wrapped Up

City prosecutors said Friday that they had wrapped up the investigation in the so-called Bittsevsky Maniac case, one of the highest-profile serial murder cases in years.

Alexander Pichushkin, 32, is accused of murdering of 52 people, dozens of them in Bittsevsky Park in southern Moscow, the City Prosecutor's Office said in a statement. Prosecutors say Pichushkin committed the slayings over six years, beginning in 2000 and ending with his arrest in 2006. The last murder Pichushkin is charged with happened on June 5, 2006, when prosecutors say he lured a female acquaintance into Bittsevsky Park and smashed her over the head with a hammer. He was arrested at his apartment on June 16.

Investigators say they were able to track down the suspect because the woman had left a note for a relative at her apartment saying she planned to meet up with Pichushkin.
