8 Arrested for Attack on Protesters

Eight suspects have been placed under arrest in connection with a savage assault on anti-nuclear protesters in Siberia that left one activist dead and several others injured, prosecutors said Tuesday.

The suspects will be charged with manslaughter and hooliganism in the coming days for their roles in the attack early Saturday morning, Alexander Semyonov, a spokesman for the Irkutsk Regional Prosecutor's Office, told Interfax.

Masked assailants armed with metal rods and baseball bats broke into the protesters' camp in the forest near the city of Angarsk. One activist, Ilya Borodayenko, 26, died of severe head injuries in a hospital a few hours later.

A court is to rule on whether to place five more suspects under arrest in connection with the incident, Semyonov told Interfax. The suspected attackers are aged 16 to 22.

The suspects told authorities that the assault was to avenge an attack on a skinhead by a group of anti-fascist activists two weeks ago, Semyonov said.

The group Autonomous Action, which organized the camp, said its 20 activists had been taking part in a protest against the Angarsk Electrolysis Chemical Plant. Russia is planning a uranium enrichment center at the plant, which had previously been producing uranium fuel for nuclear power plants.

One camper was injured so badly that he was still in intensive care, Semyonov said Tuesday.
