2 Teenagers are Arrested for Going on Tractor Joy Ride

Two teenage joy riders in Karelia were arrested for stealing three tractors to race at night, Interfax reported.

The boys, aged 15 and 16, were arrested Monday in the northern republic's Lakhdenpokhsky region after three tractors were stolen from the village of Ikhala in the middle of the night. The two said they had stolen the tractors to race them, police said.

In a separate tractor-related incident, police officers Sunday shot out the tires of a tractor whose drunken driver was weaving erratically through a town 40 kilometers east of Moscow. Police in the Moscow region town of Noginsk were forced to shoot out the tires of a tractor piloted by a 48-year-old man after he refused orders to stop the vehicle and ignored a warning shot, Interfax reported.

The man, who was from the neighboring Tver region, was drunk.

Tractor incidents are not uncommon outside Moscow.

Last year, a drunken tractor driver in the Leningrad region tried to escape police by turning into a forest. His plan failed when police pumped nine bullets into his tires. The driver managed to limp along for 350 meters before his vehicle finally came to a halt and he was arrested.

In 2004, police fired 31 bullets into the tire of a tractor to stop a similarly inebriated driver.
