2 Officials from Gref's Ministry Arrested

Two senior officials in the Economic Development and Trade Ministry were arrested Monday on suspicion of taking bribes from a federal property official also suspected of corruption, prosecutors said.

Andrei Mylov, head of the personnel department that deals with top ministry workers, was arrested together with his deputy, Gennady Yartsev, after accepting a $30,000 bribe from Vladimir Afanasyev, former head of the Tyumen region branch of the Federal Property Management Agency, the Tyumen regional prosecutor's office said in a statement, Interfax reported.

Afanasyev passed on the money through an intermediary in an attempt to keep his post and hide the fact that he had illegally transferred a piece of federal land to a private company, prosecutors said.

Critics of the Federal Property Management Agency and businesses whose wares it has confiscated and sold off have suggested that some of its employees run scams made possible by a law that allows the state to sell off property seized during criminal investigations, even before a final court decision has been made.
