What to Do: Go to the Beer Festival

If you would drink beer with a goat, on a boat, in a box, in your sox, in a car or at a bar -- as the Dr. Seuss-inspired saying goes -- then the Eighth Great Moscow Beer Festival is the event for you. Held annually at the Luzhniki sports complex, the festivities this year commence June 30 and run through to July 8.

On the bill are all manner of beer-

related activities. As always, the main drawing card is to be the People's Degustation, where festival goers rate beers using a voting card given out at the entrance -- this year organizers expect some 300,000 people to take part. Besides a sea of beer to drink and a mountain of beer snacks to try, there are abundant other activities. For those full of vim and vigor there are sports such as "beer sumo," "beer orientation," weightlifting competitions and arm wrestling. For those who would rather watch, a round of the international Strongman competition is to be held July 1 in the Small Sporting Arena. There's also a non-stop entertainment program with live bands, competitions and other such merriments.

The festival runs daily until 10:30 p.m., opening at noon on weekends and at 5 p.m. on weekdays. Entry costs 50 rubles. For more information, see
